Established in 1958, HokBen manages and operates 150 outlets throughout Java and Bali. The latest launch of its 24/7 online delivery system saw a vast surge in customer demand for the popular Japanese fast food chain, where some days could see up to 3,000 delivery requests per day. This prompted HokBen to upgrade its data architecture in order to support its ever-growing volume of data and the company’s expansion plans.
The challenges faced by HokBen’s IT team include a lack of flexibility to accommodate new requirements to incorporate Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) applications in its legacy infrastructure of 13 servers and 6TB in storage. As a result, the system was unable to keep track of the rapidly growing volume of business critical data. Furthermore, HokBen’s IT team also projected that there would be difficulties in scaling up. The data backups were also considered inefficient in terms of time management and resource utilization as it took a day or two for each server to be individually backed up. Service disruptions were also an issue with server downtime occurring frequently which caused gaps in customer service levels. This results in revenue loss and customer dissatisfaction.
The NetApp solution created for HokBen was inspired by its Data Fabric vision, which aims to help companies achieve consistent data management, efficient data movement and IT resource visibility. The solution consisted of NetApp FAS3220, together with NetApp Virtual Storage Console (VSC) for VMware® vSphere™ and NetApp® Flash Pool™.
Since NetApp’s new solution architecture, HokBen reduced its number of servers from 13 to 4; it now has 30 virtual machines running on 7 blade servers. With the de-duplication and compression across both its primary and secondary storage systems, HokBen reduced capacity consumption and network usage while minimizing its storage space footprint.

Have added diagnostics, non-disruptive revovery and scaled-out storage capacity capabilities with the deployment of FAS3220. NetApp combined FAS3220 with the NetApp Integrated Data Protection portfolio where it allowed HokBen to take copies of data volume in seconds, and to also help HokBen achive a solid state disk (SSD) – like performance at hard disk drive (HDD)-like prices.
The implementation of the solution only took a month to complete. The transition from the traditional system to the new one was quick due to proactive and cooperative NetApp team working closely with the HokBen IT team. With this new system in place, HokBen is excited for its future. HokBen already has expansion plans in place which includes franchising as well as having some of their stores operating 24 hours.
